HA NOI (VNS) — The 27th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) will be held for the first time in Viet Nam from July 17 to 24, 2016.
More than 1,000 candidates from 70 countries and territories will participate in the competition.
A campaign was held in Ha Noi on Monday to encourage local teachers and students to engage in the event.
Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Vinh Hien said Viet Nam has been participating in the IBO since 1996.
Over the last two decades, Vietnamese students brought home 56 medals, comprising one gold, 10 silver, 45 bronze medals, besides two certificates of merit, he said.
He said Viet Nam had organised the Asian Physics Olympiad in 2004, the International Mathematics Olympiad in 2007, the International Physics Olympiad in 2008, and the International Chemistry Olympiad in 2014.
Following the success of the international Olympiads in Viet Nam, the organisation of the 27th IBO would contribute to the implementation of the diplomatic policy and integration guidelines of the party and state to enhance co-operation with countries in the region and beyond, Hien said.
It also aimed to promote learning and improve the quality of human resources for the country, as well as develop friendship and exchanges among teachers and students of countries, encourage international understanding and co-operation, and promote the image of Viet Nam among foreign friends, he said.
The ministry was urgently preparing for the event and all requirements have been met, he said.
To ensure the event's success, he asked relevant agencies to continue promoting the contest, while working with the IBO committee to implement professional activities.
Ha Noi Education University, which will host the 27th IBO, has been asked to prepare all necessary facilities for the event.
Viet Nam was looking toward to the event by promoting pragmatic actions such as ending the discharge of pollutants into the environment, using biological measures in cultivation and creating clean and safe products, he said.—VNS
